“Another turning point, a fork stuck in the road
Time grabs you by the wrist, directs you where to go
So make the best of this test, and don’t ask why
It’s not a question, but a lesson learned in time
It’s something unpredictable, but in the end it’s right
I hope you had the time of your life”
This song makes me think of the past few years for Wendell. Let’s rewind to his first attempt at a 100 mile race three years ago. He went in with all the passion and hope in the world. He came out a hero in many people’s minds but not his own. He completed more than half the course which is more than most people would ever dare to dream of doing. Still, it was not enough.
Last year, Wendell took another stab at it, doing the Georgia Death Race. Again, with all of the heart and passion in the world, this time Wendell got to mile 77 and had to stop due to injury. Back home, we all followed him on social media in pure amazement but somewhere in Georgia was a very accomplished man who was not still satisfied….
Last month this determined athlete took all of the lessons learned, plans, hopes, dreams, determination and training up North to Vermont. He had a job to finish, one that most of us would never dare to start. Wendell set off on his journey but this time, he ended it the way his mind always knew he could. 100 Miles….COMPLETE!
There are way to many accomplishments for me to list but we all know the trail races, the adventure races, the marathons, the competitions and the many other athletic feats that Wendell has done all pale in comparison to the wonderful person that Wendell is. As a coach, an athlete, a business partner, a family man and friend. This is not only an athlete with a ton of heart, this is a person that pours his heart into everything that he does and this is why Wendell, YOU are the August MCCF Athlete of the Month!
